A Spanish volunteer offered in-person interpreting during the Blue Ridge Health District‘s Birth Expo, an annual event with 30+ non-profit vendors that provide family and social support for new families. About one quarter the participating agencies have Spanish-speaking staff.

Presenting this information to the students in their native language helped them understand their importance in the program. This document served about 100 adult students.

Volunteers translated signage for Spanish-speaking guests at The Haven day shelter that are so they can fully access and understand the resources available to them. This signage benefits the displaced Hispanic community by ensuring that they can store essential items requiring refrigeration. This signage serves the roughly 260 strong population of people experiencing homelessness.

For UVA’s Office for Sustainability, Spanish volunteers translated information on stickers for the waste bins at athletic fields to aid custodial staff.

A rack card to inform families with children under 6 years of age about Child Health Partnership‘s free and voluntary developmental screening program was translated by MOVE’s Arabic, Burmese, Dari, Farsi, Nepali, and Swahili volunteer teams. This provided information to families on the benefits of having their children screened and how to reach out to request a free and voluntary screening for their child.

UVA’s Darden School of Business requested MOVE’s help to distribute information to their international students. Volunteers from the Indonesian, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese teams translated a document helping international students find Student Disability Access Center accommodations in their native language. The student population at Darden is approximately 40% international, and many students do not come from countries where English is an official language. Darden’s program is extremely rigorous and the administrators wanted to ensure all students understand academic accommodations available to anyone with a disability.

Spanish volunteers translated the Virginia Alzheimer’s Disease Center (VADC) web page with resources for Care Partners of persons with dementia after a number of requests for a translated version of this page were made by Spanish speakers in our community. This information is very beneficial for new care partners who are struggling to cope with the changes and challenges of providing care for a loved one. Those from underserved communities would especially benefit from increased access to resources available to them.

MOVE Spanish, French, Nepali, and Swahili volunteers translated content for a multi-lingual poster and for a multi-lingual bus sign for UVA Human Resources‘ annual Open Enrollment campaign. The information helps non-native speakers understand what resources are available to them for Open Enrollment.

Upon request of UVA’s Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL), Spanish volunteers translated a flyer to distribute information about the Virginia Early Childhood Consultation (VECC) program. VECC is a newly funded program by the Virginia Department of Education available to Virginia’s early childhood programs with the highest needs (low quality teacher-child interactions).

In an effort to provide better inclusivity, outreach to multi-lingual families, and to encourage better participation, MOVE volunteers translated the Baker-Butler PTO welcome flyer into Spanish, Dari, and Mandarin.

Spanish volunteers translated slides introducing UVA Health’s Child Life services on the inpatient unit and PICU. Child Life Specialists help children cope with hospitalization and illness, and the translation will allow Spanish-speaking families to understand the resources available to them.

Many activities and events were planned across the community for Bike Month (May), especially for kids and families. The City of Charlottesville and Safe Routes to School, among other community efforts, reached out to MOVE to share resources with as many community members as possible. A backpack flyer was sent home with every elementary school student about Bike Month happenings and free and low-cost ways to get connected to biking in the community. MOVE volunteers translated this flyer into Spanish and Dari.

A volunteer translated information to be used in a brochure that communicates details about the Central Virginia Community Justice organization, contact information, and the services the organization offers. This brochure will be circulated among the greater Central Virginia Spanish speaking population so they can have better access to community justice services.

A volunteer on the MOVE Dari team provided in-person translation to help enroll a Dari speaker into Network 2 Work at PVCC. This allowed PVCC to provide tuition assistance and financial support while the Dari speaker completes the Commercial Driver’s License to move into high-paying, quality employment.

This allows people with limited English proficiency to understand their rights and their ability to file a complaint of discrimination in the community, thereby making remedies for those that experience discrimination more accessible.

MOVE volunteers helped to work on a a request on behalf of the Albemarle Education Association which is the sole professional association and union representing all ACPS school employees. They are fighting to have their labor rights recognized. They want custodians to be included as a bargaining group in negotiations but they need help reaching their custodians who only speak Nepali. Dozens of custodians employed by ACPS speak Nepali. With the translated documents, these workers gain dignity and respect in the workplace.

MOVE’s Russian team translated brochures for the City of Charlottesville Office of Human Rights used to reach out to the community about the office’s services addressing allegations of discrimination in employment, housing, and access to public space, private education and credit.

Upon request of the American Red Cross, Spanish volunteers in the MOVE program translated a document providing information about a service to install free smoke alarms. This program could potentially help thousands of Spanish-speaking households to be made safer, and even save lives.

MOVE connected a Ukrainian-speaking volunteer to the Ukraine Sustainability Lab, which is completing a a project for a Ukrainian City Mayor with the goal of presenting to the State Department in early December and the project ultimately being delivered to the Ukrainian Embassy.

MOVE volunteers translated a document into Spanish that helps assist the Region Ten Community Services Board (CSB) create a 1-minute animated video on how parents and caregivers can talk to their kids about alcohol and other drugs. They are using this survey feedback to guide the topics that will be covered. The animated video will be spread to an audience in the combined areas of Charlottesville, Albemarle, Greene, Louisa, Fluvanna, and Nelson counties.

Volunteers from MOVE’s Spanish, Mandarin, and Korean teams translated visitor materials for the Blandy Experimental Farm of UVA’s Department of Environmental Science, which includes a 300-tree Ginkgo Grove, one of the largest in the United States. Translated information includes resources about ginkgo natural history, cultural importance, and the historical significance of the Ginkgo Grove as research orchard. The translations offers further opportunities for visitor engagement and education.

MOVE volunteers translated a document into Spanish for the Young Women Leaders Program, a mentoring program that matches middle school students with UVA undergraduates. A portion of the middle school families speak Spanish, and translating the rest of the application into Spanish helps make the program more accessible and affirming to all participants.

MOVE volunteers translated a document into Spanish to have the Men’s Leadership Project (through the UVA Women’s Center) application available to families that speak Spanish. This will help families enroll their 7th grader to be mentored by a UVA student.
